All you need to do is send a copy of the NLC email (as per template below) to your MP on Monday morning at 9am. We must all send them at the same time to have maximum impact. Lets fill officials inboxes. Let them know we are not going away.

EMAIL SUBJECT TITLE : LEASEHOLD REFORM BROKEN PROMISES

We are devastated at the decision to delay bringing forward legislation for the fourth year in a row. For Leaseholders these promises have been a cruel deception. A cruel deception that has ruined many of our lives with the false promise that substantial reform was just around the corner. It was not and sadly it was absent from the Queens Speech.


What is the Queens Speech and why is it important?

The Queen’s Speech is part of the State Opening of Parliament, the formal beginning of each new session of parliament. Each session of parliament is around a year.The Queen’s Speech allows the government to set out its priorities and programme for the coming session, including the legislation that it intends to pass. The third session began on 10 May 2022.


Why was this Queens speech so important to leaseholders?

Government repeatedly promised leaseholders a two-part legislative reform programme. The first being the Ground Rent Bill that comes into force in June 2022 and the second a much wider leasehold reform that will help EXISTING leaseholders. On the timing of future legislation, during the leasehold reform (Ground Rent) Bill’s Committee Stage in the House of Lords 9 June 2021 Lord Greenhalgh said the aim was to bring forward a Bill on wider leasehold reform in the third session of THIS parliament.

LEASEHOLDERS WERE PROMISED THE SECOND BILL WOULD FOLLOW THE FIRST PROMPTLY BUT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. The Queens Speech Briefing note did include Leasehold Reform ( Click here for link – see page 69) but it only re affirmed the government remains ‘Committed to ….. blah blah blah”.

WORDS ARE MEANINGLESS WITHOUT ACTIONS

Please email your MP and request they raise this issue on your behalf. They can do this via numerous means, such as submitting a written question or bringing up in the Commons.

Because the promised Bill will not be delivered during this session it means it will be 2023/2024 session of parliament (the 4th session – thats if we get there). This will be just before a general election and therefore runs the risk of being kicked further into the long grass.

WE CAN NOT AND WILL NOT LET THAT HAPPEN ! Nothing will change if only one or two people speak out.

We need MASS ACTION.
